  • Notes
    • Thomas Benton Edmonston, son of Ninian Edmonston and Mary Ann Strother, was born 29 Jan 1842. He served as a private in Co I of the 62nd Confederate Regiment of North Carolina. He inherited the family real estate after the death of his mother in 1882. By the time of his death he had converted the original farm house his father Ninian had built in 1823 into a summer resort or convalescent home. He was married on 20 April 1876 to Maria Beatty, a school teacher at Bethel. She was described by one of her students as "the meanest damn woman I ever saw." Thomas Benton's will mentions a slab to be erected next to his wife's tombstone, and calls her his beloved wife, so there is likely more to the story. They had no children and his bequests are to nieces, nephews and friends. He particularly describes his lands in Pigeon Twp, Haywood Co, NC, known as Edmonston Homestead, where he lives.
