- James Edmonston, son of Bazil Brooke Edmonston and Hannah Rose, was born 1786 in North Carolina. It seems he was already married and had a young son in the Buncombe Co NC census of 1810. The 1860 census of Schuyler Co IL gives the name of his wife as Mary Carling. The 1850 census gives her name as Polly, the customary nickname for Mary, and her birthplace as SC. James was for many years a Justice of the Peace in Bainbridge Twp in Schuyler Co and C.N.E. remarks favorably about James' beautifully legible letters that "furthered the cause of this family history." James died about 1874 but no stone has been found to mark his grave nor any obituary. He was probably buried in Krohe Cemetery, Bainbridge Twp, Schuyler Co.
