Notes |
- Sarah Royse (Royce) was born in November 1791 in Bardstown, Nelson county Kentucky, daughter of Frederick Royse and Sarah Dewitt. She married Levi Augustus Nugent 13 January 1811 in Clark county Indiana. He is the son of Willoughby Nugent and Rebecca Catherine Ross. Like the Royse family, the Nugents were in Nelson county Kentucky, before moving to Clark county Indiana. Levi Augustus Nugent is named in the 1812 Will of his father Willoughby Nugent, in Clark county Indiana.
According to Levi Nugent's obituary, following the War of 1812, "he settled on White River, in this county (Lawrence county Indiana), near Old Palestine and resided in this county until the day of his death." Goodspeed's History of Lawrence County Indiana (1884) mentions travels of Nugent neighbors, Isom and Eli Burton, who "made several trips to New Orleans on flat-boats laden with produce, grain, lime and other articles. They usually started from the "Old Nugent Place," on White River, the trip occupying several weeks and being attended with dangers, exposure and much hard work."
Levi Nugent and Sarah Royse had a number of children, and probably also raised several nephews. They appear in the 1850 Census of Lawrence county Indiana, where Levi Nugent is shown as a grocer. The McFall children are grandchildren of Sarah Royce Nugent's deceased sister, Rebecca Royse McFall.

Levi Nugent died 31 September 1865 and is buried in the Red Cross Cemetery, Marion township, Lawrence county Indiana. Sarah Royse Nugent died a year later on 17 August 1866. It is not clear where she is buried, but family records suggest she might be interred in the Burton Family Cemetery, neighbors to the Nugents in Lawrence county Indiana.
